Sample Iceland Holiday Itinerary

Prior to departure, you will receive a bespoke itinerary created by a Rich Vein Travel expert filled with advice and recommendations. Read an extract of one of our itineraries for Iceland below.

Day 1

When you arrive in Reykjavik from Keflavík International Airport, the beauty of Iceland will be instantly recognisable with the pier and old wooden buildings of the fishing village just metres away from the exclusive Black Pearl. With only ten individually designed spacious suites, this serviced Apartment Hotel epitomises elegance and modern luxury. Once you arrive you’ll be greeted by the extraordinarily attentive reception staff. If you hired a car from the airport, be sure to make use of the secure private parking provided free of charge. Take the lift to the room, and remove your footwear to fully appreciate the heated marble floors. After exploring the bedroom, the bathroom and the terrace, head to the kitchen. In the far corner you will find your own Nespresso machine complete with a vast array of coffee capsules. We love the Livanto capsule covered in gold for a well-balanced espresso with fine fruity notes. After a much needed caffeine boost, make your way to Svarta Kaffid for a hearty flavourful soup served in a bowl of bread. Trust us on this one. It’s only a short walk away from the Black Pearl and along the way you will walk past the Harpa and stainless steel Solafrio, two of the most popular architectural structures in Reykjavik. Feeling a few degrees warmer, walk back in the direction you came towards Austurvöllur Square in the heart of the city’s vibrant old town. Feel free to explore the Altþingishús (Parliament House), the Parliament House Garden – the country’s oldest park and the Dómkirkjan (cathedral).

In the evening, freshen up and relax at the Black Pearl. As night falls visit the Fiskfelagid Fish Company for the best seafood in Reykjavik.

Day 2

Having selected to have breakfast delivered to your suite, enjoy the quality and variety of the Black Pearls bountiful breakfast.  After breakfast head down to reception where a vehicle will transport you to the South Westerly part of Iceland for an incredible guided tour of the Golden Circle. Visit Geyser geothermal area, where the most active hot spring Strokkur shoots steaming water up to 30 meters high every few minutes. Then gaze at Gullfoss (Golden Falls) as the powerful water plunges down into a thirty two metre deep crevice.  Afterwards, explore the historic Thingvellir National Park. This incredible UNESCO World Heritage site is the national shrine of Iceland where the Vikings established the world’s first parliament in AD 930. Geologically, it is a series of huge fissures in the earth’s crust caused by the rifting of the North American and Eurasian Plate. This activity created beautiful rock features. For the worriers amongst you, rest assured as the plates are moving at a rate of a few centimetres per year, meaning that you will undoubtedly be safe visiting Thingvellir! And for the Game of Thrones fans amongst you this is also where countless White Walker scenes have been filmed/ The final stop off on today’s tour is a volcanic crater lake of Kerio which is approximately 270 metres long and 55 metres deep. After a full day of sightseeing, you will conclude with drop-off at your original departure point.

As with last night, dinner is effectively on your doorstep. Located a few minutes away from the Black Pearl is Forettabarrin serving tapas style dishes from around the world, made out of Iceland’s freshest ingredients, seafood and seasonal game.

Day 3

Following an incredible sleep have a lazy morning take full advantage of your impeccably designed suite with another Nespresso coffee, on the sofa. Before breakfast be sure to utilise the complementary laundry service at the Black Pearl so your favourite jumpers can be worn later in the week. For breakfast, how does Bergsson Mathus sound? With healthy, tasty food all day long you may want to go back for lunch. With sourdough, chia porridge, berry compotes, prosciutto, sausages, and bacon, Bergsson Mathus can easily cater for all of your breakfast needs and desires. After a hearty breakfast make your way to the harbour, a hive of lively activities and attractions, and a beautiful place to take a stroll. But spend all of your time outside however, step inside the Vikin Maritime Museum and learn how an ocean practically created Iceland and allowed it to become the place it is today. The museum’s varied exhibitions show the development of the Icelandic fish industry and coast culture through the years from the time of settlement to the twenty first century.

At the top of Reykjavik’s list of attractions however, is the gigantic 73-metre tall Hallgrímskirkja Church. Its architecture was inspired by the interesting forms created when volcanic lava cools into igneous rock. If you’re unafraid of heights and the weather is in your favour take the elevator to the top to see the city from above. In the evening, climb aboard a powerful super jeep and travel into the inky blackness of the Icelandic night. This four hour excursion will take you to the prime locations to watch the Aurora Borealis. Learn about the science behind the natural phenomenon from your knowledgeable guide and with luck, experience a dazzling display of light and colour from wherever you choose to view this spectacular light show. If tonight is not the night, you have two more to try!

Day 4

On the fourth day, we recommend exploring the South of Iceland. There are a variety of options to choose from all over Reykjavik. It may be worth hiring a car as you will be able to reach places that day tours cannot when Reykjavik is the starting point, such as the ice caves in Vatnajökull and Jokulsarlon Lagoon. It will also enable you to create your own itinerary selecting activities that day tours often struggle to accommodate such as snowmobiling and glacier walks. Rich Vein Travel can work with you to decide on accommodation in your location of choice should you wish to stay overnight. Alternatively we propose a Southern day tour where you will be able to sample elements of the South in a day. After being picked up from the Black Pearl, journey across the coast of South Iceland past lava fields, icebergs, and glacier lakes. Visit Vik, Iceland’s southernmost village and explore the black sandy beach nearby. Continue on to the Seljalandsfoss waterfall and walk behind and through the waterfall to Skógafoss, one of Iceland’s largest and most powerful waterfalls. The 6 metre drop produces such enormous amounts of spray that rainbows can regularly be seen on bright winter days. The final stop on the tour before being dropped off at the Black Pearl will be the Sólheimajökull and Mýrdalsjökull glaciers. The spectacular surroundings are marked by rugged and majestic rock formations thoroughly shaped by the glacier. And they will undoubtedly be one of the highlights of your Icelandic adventure. Due to your late arrival back at the hotel, and your early start tomorrow order dinner to suite using their catering service. Have a hot shower, submerge yourself in your feather duvet and relax until your food arrives.
