The Dunmore, Dunmore Town

Three miles long and half a mile wide, Harbour Island has become renowned for old-world glamour, pastel-coloured buildings, car-free streets, and a wondrous stretch of pink sand.  Sitting atop the crown of Harbour Island’s pink-sand beach, boasting some of the best views on the island, the Dunmore caters to the island’s most discerning visitors, while maintaining the history and charm that have made the Dunmore distinct. This islands laidback atmosphere provides a quiet retreat for those in pursuit of a laid-back island hideaway.

This small hotel was founded in 1963 and was operated as a private club where its guests, referred to as “campers”, all had to be invited to stay. However, it has since been opened up to travellers in pursuit of a luxury experience. With the beautiful low-rise cottages with names like Lime North, Coral West and Yellow West tucked away down a little path among the estate’s gardens, The Dunmore continues to be the epitome of refined elegance. Each cottage houses beautiful rooms with private patios and luxurious amenities such as Molton Brown personal care products, Nespresso coffee machines, and sumptuous bathrobes. Whilst a handful of private residences perfect for families, couples travelling together, or a larger group seeking more space are available. With added flexibility, each private residence provides guests with a variety of configurations, in addition to the amenities of the cottages as the hotel’s incredible facilities and services just a short stroll away.

All guests can expect complimentary use of kayaks, paddleboards and snorkelling equipment provided by The Dunmore to explore the aquamarine waters. However, if you would instead prefer motorised action, The Dunmore staff can arrange the hire of a jet ski, a private charter for further exploration or organise water skiing. Whilst, the Clubhouse is the perfect place to relax in the evening as this vintage 60s-era retro glam dining room serves a sumptuous blend of French, Continental and Caribbean cuisine. Fresh local lobster tail, Caribbean Bouillabaisse, and Cajun Spiced organic chicken are just some of the options on offer as the Clubhouse elevates local ingredients to new heights, as the flavours dance on the taste buds of every diner.

Dunmore Town itself is the perfect town for exploration, once the British colonial capital of the Bahamas, it was governed by Lord Dunmore, who had overseen New York and Virginia. When he arrived on Harbour Island in the 1780s, he created a grid pattern of a dozen streets and with beach access every 400 yards. The clip-clop of hooves may have been replaced with the whir of golf carts, but the daily pace since Dunmore’s time hasn’t changed all that much. As the town, (the only town on Harbour Island) evokes the laid back atmosphere evident across the Bahamas. Explore alone, or participate one of several walking tours as you meander your way through streets lined with palm trees, pastel-coloured houses and unique restaurants and shops.

Sample Bahamas Holiday Itinerary

Prior to departure, you will receive a bespoke itinerary created by a Rich Vein Travel expert filled with advice and recommendations. Read an extract of one of our itineraries for the Bahamas below.
Day 1

Take a direct flight from London Heathrow to Nassau, the capital city full of culture and bursting with character. A 10-minute car journey will see you arrive at Baha Mar, a luxurious new development blending relaxation with exploration for couples and families alike. With your choice of three luxury hotels, a spectacular collection of bars and restaurants, luxury shopping and a stunning ocean view casino, you will be truly spoilt for choice as for how to spend your days in the Bahamas. In fact, you may never want to leave. Check in to the Grand Hyatt Baha Mar and try not to be distracted by the glorious aquarium behind the front desk. Once you arrive in your incredibly spacious room, take note of the breath-taking ocean and island views. This is the view that you will be waking up to every morning for the next few days.   Freshen up and make your way down to the pool area for lunch. We recommend Drift Bar and Grill which serves Pan-Latin and American cuisine. Unwind with local beers and fruity cocktails, while dining on conch fritters and fish ceviche.
Feeling relaxed and refreshed, take a dip in one of the Grand Hyatt’s six swimming pools or sun yourself on the exclusive beach for guests of the resort only. After a quick nap, head to Blue Sail for dinner. The restaurant overlooking Sandy Bay beach offers Mediterranean inspired dishes and delectable Bahamian favourites with views of the ocean. Fried Spicy Snapper with Bahamian Rice and Peas and Grouper with Ratatouille and an Anchovy and Caper Vinaigrette are just two of the main dishes on offer here. It will not disappoint.
Day 2
After a lie-in, you may want to skip breakfast and head straight into town for your food and culture tour. This walking tour will take you through downtown Nassau as you explore a variety of eateries including a family-run Bahamian soul-food restaurant, a spice merchant, and an organic chocolatier. Beyond the culinary delights, you will also learn about the rich culture, history and colonial architecture that can be found all over Nassau. Spend the afternoon making full use of the non-motorised watersports available on Cable Beach, with kayaks, snorkelling, paddle boarding and inflatable toys. Following an action-packed day head back to the Grand Hyatt. After freshening up we recommend 3 Tides for dinner. This Baha Mar restaurant specialises in fresh seafood so expect octopus and lobster to feature on the menu alongside the traditional steak main courses.
Day 3

A 6:30am wakeup call is in the cards today. To make up for the early start head to Café Madeline, a Parisian café tucked away in the heart of Baha Mar for coffee, macaroons, and freshly baked pastries. At around 8:00am you will be picked up from the hotel by Powerboat Adventures and embark on a one-hour high-speed boat ride to the dreamy Exuma cays. On this all-day adventure, you will pull in to the secluded Allan’s Cay to feed Rock Iguanas (Cyclura cychlura inornata). With the splash of the anchor, you will arrive at Ship Channel Cay. The Island offers incredible 360 views of the stunning waters around you. Explore the island or relax on the beach until the arrival of the stingrays and sharks, whilst everybody can feed the stingrays, it’s advised that the professionals handle the sharks. After several hours spent on the Cay, a complimentary dinner will be provided. You’ll spend the final hours on the Cay snorkelling and if you choose to, participating in a cooking lesson on how to make Conch. Powerboat Adventures will ensure you arrive safely back at the Grand Hyatt.

Have a quick coffee in your hotel room courtesy of the Keurig coffee machine and reflect on your action-packed day. After freshening up, head to the Grand Hyatt’s incredible casino with 1,140 state-of-the-art slot machines and 119 table games featuring 4 variations of Blackjack, Single and Double Zero Roulette, Craps, and 3 variations of Baccarat. Depending on how lucky you are, you may end up staying until the casino closes at 4am. Jump-start your day or satisfy your night-time cravings at the Suckling Pig. This all-day, all-night Baha Mar eatery possesses a comprehensive menu, a full bar, and a wide selection of beers.
Day 4

Today can be summarised in four words – complete and utter relaxation. Energetic Explorer counsellors can entertain the resorts youngest guests with a diverse array of exciting activities and challenges. Whilst parents can enjoy a dazzling array of treatments at the ESPA spa or perfect their swing on the sprawling Jack Nicklaus Signature Golf Course. This resort is perfect for a luxury golf holiday. Finish off your day at Katsuya for a memorable dinner. Katsuya pairs expert sushi chef Katsuya Uechi’s fresh takes on Japanese classics with design icon Philippe Starck’s sleek and sultry interiors. We recommend dressing for the occasion as the experience, décor, and tantalising food is undoubtedly Instagram worthy.
