Sample New Zealand Holiday Itinerary

Prior to departure, you will receive a bespoke itinerary created by a Rich Vein Travel expert filled with advice and recommendations. Read an extract of one of our itineraries for New Zealand below.

Day 1

Upon arrival at Christchurch airport collect your hire vehicle and drive to The George Hotel just twenty minutes away. Located in the heart of Christchurch overlooking the picturesque Hagley Park and River Avon, the luxurious boutique George Hotel is one of just 520 hotels who feature within the exclusive Small Luxury Hotels of World collection. Following many hours in air, there is no better hotel than the The George which prides itself on comfort and tranquillity and is renowned for its attentive staff, five-star status, and two award-winning restaurants. With incredibly comfortable beds, elegant white tiled bathrooms, underfloor heating, and night sensor lighting, your cosy room is the perfect place space to relax in. However, the best way to combat jet lag is to stay active. So explore the Christchurch Botanic Gardens which date back to 1863 when an English oak was planted to commemorate the solemnisation of the marriage of Prince Albert and Princess Alexandra of Denmark. The Botanic Gardens are the biggest green space in the city centre. Observe the exotic flowers in the steamy conservatories, appreciate the colourful flowers in bloom in the beds that surround you, and smell the pungent herbs in the Fragrance Garden. After exploring Christchurch’s land, enjoy some time on the water, gliding along the peaceful Avon River, guided by a skilled punter. Head to one of the local café’s for lunch or Mexicano’s for classic fiery Mexican eats. Then return to The George for a nap.

When you wake up in the evening, there is no need to worry about where to go for dinner, as your room at the George is half-board. Have an early night. Tomorrow, adventure awaits.

Day 2

Following a sumptuous breakfast at the George, drive towards Lake Tekapo and Mount Cook approximately three hours away. Check in at the hotel, situated minutes away from Lake Tekapo, in fact, you are so close that you will see the Lake from your room. Spend the rest of the day exploring Lake Tekapo, the second largest lake in New Zealand’s South Island, then begin a scenic drive to Lake Pukaki. Lake Pukaki is a glacial lake that has become famous for its milky blue colour. However as the lake looks best when the sun is shining, it may be worth visiting on day 3 instead. From Lake Pukaki, Aoraki/Mount Cook National Park is twenty minutes away. Aoraki/Mount Cook National Park is a vast, untouched landscape spread over 700km of the Mackenzie region. Aoraki was a young boy who, along with his three brothers, were the sons of Rakinui, the Sky Father. Whilst on a voyage, their waka tilted. Aoraki and his brothers climbed onto the top side of their canoe. However, the south wind froze them and turned them to stone. Their canoe became the South Island, and their prows became the Marlborough Sounds. Aoraki, the tallest, became the highest peak, and his brothers created the Southern Alps. Or so the story goes, as per Māori legend. Nonetheless it impossible not be taken aback by the magnitude of the park and the invisible spirituality. Walkers and hikers are spoilt for choice in the Aoraki/Mount Cook National Park, with trails ranging from easy walks to challenging alpine expeditions.  Giant glaciers cover 40% of the land, including New Zealand’s largest glacier – the Tasman Glacier and the four other major valley systems of the Godley, Murchison, Hooker, and Mueller. The beauty must be seen to be believed.

In the evening return to Lake Tekapo and dine at Tin Plate Kitchen and Bar which is a contemporary restaurant minutes away from the hotel. With a seasonal menu made from local ingredients, and universally loved favourites such as pizza, and rhubarb and apple crumble there is something for everyone.

Days 3 – 5

Exit the Lodge after breakfast and drive to Fiordland, one of the most dramatic and beautiful parts of New Zealand. Fiordland is one of the greatest wilderness regions in the world and has achieved World Heritage Status for its stunning natural features. Home to Mitre Peak, the stunning fiords of Milford, Dusky and Doubtful Sound, and the beautiful lakeside towns of Te Anau and Manapouri to name a few, Fiordland is the perfect place to spend the next few days. As a walking and sightseeing capital of the world, enjoy spectacular hikes, mesmerising views and kayaking to around the fiords.

In your evenings, you will continue to be surrounded by beauty from your luxurious cabin, room or suite at Fiordland Lodge.  The perfect base for all your exploring, the Lodge is a superb rural site with rolling grass lands and has commanding views across Lake Te Anau. The comfortable rooms at Fiordland come with private balconies and luxurious bathrooms. Whilst the high ceilings and large fireplace in the hotel’s lounge emphasise the comfort factor where guests can enjoy the flickering flames with a warming beverage. In addition to the usual amenities that you would expect in a five-star hotel, The Fiordland lodge also provides plethora of guided activities to make your stay truly magical from guided nature walks to Helicopter flights, cruises, and guided tours of the Te Anau Glow Worm Caves on the western shore of Lake Te Anau.
