The Belmond Copacabana Palace, Rio De Janeiro

The Belmond Copacabana Palace is a luxurious palatial art deco hotel set on Avenida Atlântica, overlooking the world-famous Copacabana Beach. An alluring blend of classic style and contemporary luxury, the hotel has been synonymous with glitz and glamour ever since Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers danced together at the Belmond Copacabana Palace in Flying Down to Rio in 1933. The hotel also recently made the 2018 Condé Nast Traveller’s Gold List. The history of the most luxurious hotel in Rio began when President Epitácio Pessoa asked the hotelier Otavio Guinle to construct it in 1923. The French architect Joseph Gire modelled the hotel on the Mediterranean style of the Hotels Negresco in Nice and the Carlton in Cannes – and so the Belmond Copacabana Palace became a symbol of Rio. Besides depicting tradition and luxury, the Belmond Copacabana Palace hotel has added historic value to the city of Rio de Janeiro. Since its inauguration, this glorious hotel has been the stage of important political, cultural and social events, transforming Copacabana into one of the most famous districts of the world.

The hotel has 241 rooms and suites, of which 147 are in the main building. Included in this number are 7 luxurious penthouse suites as well as 94 suites in the Tower Wing. Each room is unique featuring fine period furniture and original works of art. The furniture is made out of the Brazilian freijó or mahogany wood encrusted in the main suites with beige, green and red pieces of agate. The walls and floors are of white, itaóca pink, aurora and jú-paraná pink Brazilian marble.

As one of the most luxurious hotels in Brazil, the Belmond Copacabana Palace also boasts some of the most sophisticated restaurants in Rio. The hotel’s fine-dining Hotel Cipriani Restaurant overlooks the beautiful pool and serves award-winning Italian cuisine. Michelin-starred Pan-Asian restaurant MEE offers a scintillating menu created with dishes from Thailand, Cambodia, Malaysia, Singapore, Korea, Vietnam, China and Japan, as your taste buds journey across Asia one morsel at a time. Lastly, the recently renovated Pérgula specialising in Mediterranean cuisine is undoubtedly one of Rio’s most vibrant Carioca restaurants reflecting the colourful spirit of the city. Head to the chic Piano Bar for after-dinner cocktails before venturing out to explore the city’s lively samba clubs.

In addition to it’s illustrious history, exceptional design and exquisite cuisine, the leisure facilities at the hotel, further ensure that the Belmond Copacabana Palace is the perfect luxury retreat. The Belmond Copacabana Palace boasts a magnificent, Half-Olympic-sized swimming pool and the only rooftop tennis court in the city. Whilst the golden sands of Rio’s most famous beach are tantalisingly close and with the hotel providing exclusive beach service, sink into a sun-lounger under the shade of a parasol with your new novella. Beach attendants are on hand should you require any assistance.

Those lucky enough to travel to Rio for the famous carnival should be sure not miss the hotel’s grand Carnival Ball, the “Baile do Copa”, one of the most glamorous parties in the city.

Enjoy a spectacular breakfast at the Belmond Copacabana Palace, then spend the morning basking in the sunshine at Copacabana beach. Sink into a sun lounger and immerse yourself in your new novella. In the afternoon freshen up in your elegantly appointed room and make your way down to the lobby. In the lobby expect to be greeted by your tour guide for this afternoon because today you will visit Corcovado Mountain and the Christ the Redeemer statue on a four-hour excursion. Ride the cog train up the mountainside through the Tijuca Rainforest. Admire the scenery and take a million photos along the way. Once you reach the top you will find yourself in the presence of the iconic Christ the Redeemer statue. A symbol of Christianity across the world, the statue is listed as one of the New Seven Wonders of the World. In the evening dine at one the hotel’s three incredible restaurants. Sample authentic South American cuisine at Pérgula. Indulge in scintillating Pan-Asian creations at Michelin-starred MEE. Or live la dolce vita with an Italian feast at the Hotel Cipriani Restaurant.
Day 2

After another fantastic breakfast at the Belmond Copacabana Palace, enjoy an active morning at the hotel making use of the Half-Olympic-sized swimming pool and rooftop tennis court. Later in the day explore some of the local parks and lagoons, just a few kilometres away from the Belmond Copacabana Palace. Begin with the Jardim Botânico. This huge 346-acre botanical garden was founded in 1808 by King John VI of Portugal, and contains over 6,000 different tropical plants and trees. From here, we recommend Parque Lage at the foot of the Corcovado Mountain. Then explore Rodrigo de Freitas Lagoon in the district of Lagoa. Known as “The Heart of Rio de Janeiro” the lagoon is renowned for its beauty and tranquillity. It is also the perfect place to watch the sunset. The sun goes down just behind the Dois Irmãos (Two Brothers Mountain) and fills the sky with enchanting reds, oranges, and pinks.Freshen up in your hotel room in the evening then make your way to Piano Bar to toast to another amazing day in Rio. With an excellent list of wines, cocktails, and aperitifs, this bar has long been a favourite of A-Listers. The house pianist further enhances the charm and ambiance of Piano Bar playing with musicality and character, making it the perfect place to start your night. For dinner, dine in one of the hotel’s three restaurants.
Day 3

Rise and shine, an early start is on the cards this morning. Following your morning pickup from the Belmond Copacabana Palace embark on a tour of the city with your local guide. Take in some of Rio’s most famous sites such as the traditional Cinelandia Square, the Sambadrome, and the towering Metropolitan Cathedral. Then when you reach the Urca neighbourhood board the cable car to scale Sugar Loaf Mountain approximately 396 metres above sea level. The views of Niteroi, Copacabana and the Santa Cruz Fortress will undoubtedly make the early start worthwhile! As you will be returning to the Belmond Copacabana Palace shortly after midday, enjoy a leisurely afternoon at and around the hotel. Order room service, relax on a sun lounger by the beach or treat yourself to a quick power nap. For complete and utter relaxation however, we recommend the Belmond Copacabana Palace Spa. This fantastic spa boasts five treatment rooms, two rooms for couples, a fitness room, a sauna, steam room, relaxation area, and fitness centre. Indulgent massages, wraps and scrubs with açaí and guaraná fruits, white Amazonian clay and essential oils enhance each treatment and boost your sense of wellbeing with their revitalising properties.Spend the evening at fine dining restaurant L’Etoile. With a combination of delicious food and breath-taking ocean views from the 26th floor, this restaurant will be memorable for all the right reasons. We recommend the tasting menu created by renowned French chef Jean Paul Bondoux. Blending traditional French cuisine focused on the simplicity and high quality local produce, with seasonal dishes influenced by Brazil, each diner can expect a remarkable dining experience.
