La Sultana, Marrakech

Perfectly situated in the heart of the golden triangle, inside the Imperial City’s walls, and between the royal palaces and the Saadian Tombs, this luxurious boutique hotel exudes elegance. Made-up of five separate riads, the hotel feels maze-like with sprawling corridors and hidden chambers. With each Riad embodying a unique character, enjoy exploring each one with some exuding Imperial Fez and others tastefully decorated with Oriental décor, all tastefully finished with traditional Moroccan touches. With just 28 rooms and suites, each styled with a different theme in mind, expect Moroccan maximalist style channelling the spirit of the Bahia Palace. Like the Bahia Palace, La Sultana is truly brilliant, offering the intimacy of a smaller hotel with unparalleled one-to-one service and experiences. Adorned with sculpted ceilings, unique pieces of antique furnishings and stunning artwork, you can expect contemporary facilities such as a free minibar, iPod-docks and free Wi-Fi in every room and suite. For extra space, we recommend a Junior Suite or a Suite, the latter of which features a balcony.

This phenomenal hotel provides exceptional service to incredibly high standards throughout. Talented chefs create a refined medley of international flavours in the restaurant, served in dining rooms around the pool or al fresco on the spacious rooftop terraces overlooking the city and the Atlas Mountains. Whilst La Sultana’s spa, offers two superb hammams, a Jacuzzi, sauna, beauty centre, hairdresser, balneotherapy baths and open-air massage cabins.

Day 1

After an afternoon flight, the sun will be descending in the sky as you arrive at your exclusive riad, La Sultana. La Sultana’s location in UNESCO listed Medina, means that the hotel is the perfect base for exploring the beautiful sites of Marrakech. Following an effortless check in, freshen up in your intimate elegant room before immersing yourself in the frenetic Djemaa el-Fna, Marrakech’s main square, for your first taste of Marrakech. Located minutes away on foot from La Sultana, the square has become one of the symbols of the city since its foundation in the eleventh century. During the day Djemaa El-Fna hosts a colourful and lively open-air market, with a vast array of merchants, herbalists and snake charmers. However, as the evening draws in, the stalls make way for tables and benches set for dinner with freshly prepared dishes. For the adventurous amongst you may want to dine here amongst the locals for a thoroughly authentic experience. However, for an equally authentic Moroccan dining experience in more intimate surrounds return to La Sultana for dinner on the hotel’s roof terrace restaurant. Enjoy a pre-dinner drink looking out over the Marrakech skyline, before indulging in either the delicious tasting menu or dining a la carte from the mouth-watering menu combining continental and Moroccan influences. We recommend having an early night in advance of tomorrows action packed day.

Day 2

When your alarm rings at around 5am, you’ll be pleased that you were able to steal a few hours’ sleep the night before. With an Atlas Mountains hot air balloon ride on the horizon the early start will undoubtedly be worth it. A must for Marrakech visitors, this morning tour takes you soaring over the foothills of Morocco’s Atlas Mountains, followed by a delicious Berber breakfast and a camel ride. After returning to La Sultana, dive into the outdoor swimming pool for a refreshing swim followed by an indulgent few hours at the spa. The wellness services range from a traditional four hands body massage to scrubs using honey, sugar and spices. Feeling relaxed and refreshed, spend the afternoon taking in the cultural sights of the city. Explore the medieval Medersa Ben Youssef and the towering Koutoubia Mosque. Stop in to the Musée du Marrakech, which is housed in the glorious 19th-century Mnebhi Palace to learn about Islamic architecture and gardens, and the countries remarkable history. For lunch, stop by Naranj for sumptuous authentic falafel and fattoush. Before returning you returning to La Sultana, you may want to stop for photographs at the El Bahia Palace. The Palace is beautiful example of Alawite architecture built between 1894 and 1900 for the concubines of Ahma Ibn Moussa. The vast tiled courtyard and the exquisite monumental gardens extending for at least 8 hectares need to be seen in person to be fully appreciated. And you may spot similarities between the Palace and your own luxurious hotel. Retire to your elegant room for nap.

For dinner, we recommend Gastro MK at Maison MK.

Day 3

Enjoy a lie in followed by breakfast at the hotel. Spend the morning relaxing in your deluxe prestige room or on one of several inviting sun loungers. In the afternoon, take a trip to the Instagram worthy Jardin Majorlle painted in an intense electric blue which vividly contrasts the surroundings. In 1980, Yves Saint Laurent and his partner Pierre Bergère bought the Jardin Majorelle as a gift to the city of Marrakesh. Today the villa is home to the Museum of Islamic Art and hosts Saint Laurent’s decorative art collection. Spend the remainder of the afternoon at the Henna Café. The Henna Cafe is a space in Marrakech to enjoy food, henna, art and more. The Cafe is also a registered cultural foundation in Morocco and all income generated is used to provide free education and assistance to Moroccans individuals in need.

Freshen up at the hotel, before heading to Comptoir Darna for an evening of entertainment, delightful cuisine and cocktails. Complete your night at the trendy So Lounge. Just minutes away from Comptoir Darna and ideally located in the highly prized Hivernage district, in the heart of the gardens of the Sofitel hotel, So Lounge comes alive at night. With themed party nights, chill-out zones, DJs and the occasional famous face, So Lounge has quickly established itself as the place to be after dark.
