Sample San Francisco and Napa Valley Holiday Itinerary

Prior to departure, you will receive a bespoke itinerary created by a Rich Vein Travel expert filled with advice and recommendations. Read an extract of one of our itineraries for San Francisco and Napa Valley below.

Day 1

Located minutes away from Union Square, the Ritz-Carlton is the epitome of timeless luxury in a historic building built in 1909, characterised by modern design and unique amenities. Parallel 37, the Ritz-Carlton’s critically acclaimed signature restaurant, serves globally inspired seasonal California cuisine. Renowned German goldsmith, Wellendorff Jewellers offers a boutique in hotel lobby. Whilst the full service Club Lounge redefines the luxury hotel experience, combining intimacy, comfort and exclusivity is the perfect environment conduct business, connect with friends, or completely unwind. Rooms and suites are well appointed with luxurious Asprey bath amenities, 400-thread-count 100% combed cotton Frette linen, and a magnificent marble bathroom.

After exploring your room, and placing your luggage in the corner, freshen up and explore Union Square which is San Francisco’s major shopping spot. Here, you’ll find here luxury brands such as Tiffany’s, Coach, and Burberry, and of course the incredibly famous Macy’s. A short stroll away on the corner of Grant and Bush is the entrance gate to a Chinatown. San Francisco is home to the oldest Chinatown in the US, and as you meander your way through the bustling maze of streets and alleys you’ll be amazed by the sheer number of raditional eateries, bakeries, and herbalists. For a quick snack stop by Good Mong Kok Bakery, a favourite of Chinatown locals. This tiny bakery has no indoor seating, but serves up well-executed delicacies to go. Located a few blocks away from Chinatown is Little Italy which truly highlights the vibrant diversity of this incredible city. Head to nearby restaurant, Sotto Mare for a late lunch. The Cioppino is a culinary work of art. Following an outstandingly good lunch head for a stroll in Washington Square Park followed by a trip to Coit Tower on Telegraph Hill for incredible 360 degree views of the city and bay, including the Golden Gate and Bay bridges.

Freshen up at the hotel in the evening. For dinner and late drinks on your first day we recommend Seven Hills and Cafe Meuse, an intimate international wine bar.

Day 2

Indulge in a delectable breakfast of cheeses, charcuterie, smoked salmon, bellwether farms yogurt, seasonal fruit, morning pastries and farm-squeezed juice. After breakfast walk or cycle across the Golden Gate Bridge. The Golden Gate Bridge is one of San Francisco’s most famous landmarks as well as a piece of spectacular engineering. Near the bridge, you will come across Crissy Field. Crissy Field is a stunning place to walk or bike on a flat, hard-packed promenade with great views of the Bay and Golden Gate Bridge. You’ll find beaches, picnic tables, tidal marsh overlooks, and expert surfers riding the waves. For lunch, stop by Pacific Catch once you’re back on the other side of the bridge. Pacific Catch is a modern Fish House where locals gather to enjoy fresh seafood inspired by preparations and ingredients from the Pacific. With Poke, sushi rolls, and a twist on British fish and chips, you will be spoilt for choice. Conveniently located near Fisherman’s wharf, explore this bustling tourist attraction after lunch filled with street performers and souvenir shops. Head towards the edge of the Wharf just beyond Madame Tussauds to Pier 41 and take the Blue & Gold Fleet Tiburon Ferry for a memorable ferrry ride to the town of Tiburon. Tiburon is a former railroad town that was the terminus of the Northwestern Pacific Railroad until 1963. Since then, it has been transformed into a charming seacoast village. Whilst on the ferry you’ll be able to take amazing photograph’s as you sail past Alcatraz and Angel Island. Upon arrival at the port you’ll be able to roam the picturesque streets of the town.

After spending all day walking and exploring, have dinner at Jeanne D’arc located minutes away from the Ritz-Carlton. This incredibly charming French restaurant is renowned for its cosy décor, authentic dishes, and their Grand Marnier Soufflé which is lighter than air.

Day 3

After another delightful breakfast courtesy of the Ritz-Carlton retire to your room and have a lazy morning. Spend the afternoon visiting some of San Francisco’s best museums. With countless options there is at least one museum for everyone. There is the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art featuring stellar collections of paintings, sketches and sculptures. The Exploratorium which allows visitors to explore science, art, and human perception. The GLBT History Museum which preserves, exhibits and makes accessible a plethora of the materials documenting LGBTQ history over the last one hundred years in the Bay area. There is even the Cable Car Museum presenting cable car history and explanatory exhibits. You can easily spend weeks visiting all of the museums in the San Francisco area, but choose two or three favourites before dinner at Restaurant Gary Danko, located near Lombard Street. This award winning French restaurant is an echelon above the rest. Set in a warm enveloping space overhung with orchids and vibrant artwork, an evening at Gary Danko is both intimate and theatrical—a loving nod to an old world dining experience with its heart thoroughly planted in the new. Expect fresh, locally grown and raised foods drawn from the region’s vast seasonal offerings, prepared with precision and flair.

Day 4

Wave farewell to the Ritz-Carlton by 12pm and begin the hour drive to Yountville’s Bardessono hotel. The Bardessono is the creation of eco-developer Phil Sherburne. Sherburne’s vision in designing Bardessono was to create a sustainable, low-impact luxury hotel. Built almost exclusively from salvaged stone and reclaimed wood, this 62-suite Napa Valley hotel is one of only three LEED Platinum–certified hotels in the US, making it the pinnacle of sustainable eco-friendly living. However, this does not mean that the Bardessono comprises on luxury. Almost everything at the hotel, from the bed linens to the seasonal menu at the restaurant, is organic, sourced from within a 100-mile radius. The minimalist open-plan design feels airy and spacious. Each suite complete with gas fireplaces and private courtyards or balconies, 55” TVs and in-room iPads. The indulgent bathrooms contain soaking tubs, REN bath products and a concealed massage table. And of course, in true Californian fashion you can expect yoga classes, wine tastings, and an elegant rooftop pool.

Check in at the hotel with a complementary glass of wine presented at reception. Finish the glass in your suite, leave your bags in your room and venture outside to stretch your legs. Take advantage of the complementary bike rental and cycle to nearby vineyards before heading back for some bubbly and a dip in the rooftop pool. Freshen up in your suite. Then it’s time for dinner at on-site restaurant Lucy, which serves field-to-fork fare made from the bounty harvested daily from the hotel’s own gardens and from local organic dairy producers and farms nearby. This emphasis on organic produce, and sustainability flows is also evident in the wine list which is comprised of wines from around the world derived from small producers.
